Introduction

English is a core subject within the secondary curriculum and the course involves equipping trainee teachers with the skills necessary to become subject specialists at secondary level. The course offers many potential links with other elements, such as Drama, Media Studies and ICT.

The course has been designed:

  • to help you become an efficient, effective and enthusiastic teacher of English;

  • to equip you with the skills and knowledge to be a professional and proficient member of the profession; with the ability to adapt to the changes in the school curriculum.

The Course

There are many diverse aspects to becoming an English teacher.  The main aspects of the course will prepare you to:

  • develop students' writing, reading, speaking and listening skills throughout each key stage at secondary school;
  • develop students' interest in a wide variety of literature including: non-fiction writing, poetry, prose and drama;
  • develop the students' confidence in English with a range of activities to develop and enhance their understanding of the subject.

Theory and practice are integral elements to any teaching course. You will be involved in classroom-based practice, subject specific studies and professional studies. All elements of the course will be class-room focused and will concentrate on the learning experiences of the students.

The course will focus on the teaching of English at Key Stages 3 and 4, with a sixth form enhancement. Therefore, your teaching timetable will reflect this structure.

What is special about this course?

  • You will learn through a very distinctive course structure - focussing on the importance of both theory and practice elements.
  • Past trainees have reflected positively on their experiences of the course and their enjoyment of both in-school and theory-based learning.
  • Excellent career opportunities are presented upon qualification.
