KENT AND MEDWAY TRAINING

PGCE Secondary Mathematics at Kent and Medway Training

Introduction

Teaching Mathematics - a career that is challenging but at the same time rewarding. The PGCE Mathematics course at KMT  will enable you to develop your skills in order to meet these challenges and embark upon a rewarding career.

About the  Course
The course begins with a subject knowledge audit. You will be able to identify any gaps that you may need to work on. These will be reviewed and updated in your personal Action Plan throughout the course.
At the same time, as the course develops, you will be encouraged to reflect upon the skills and strategies needed to enable you to become an enthusiastic and successful teacher. The initial part of the course introduces you to the  National Strategy, the mathematics curriculum and different approaches to teaching the subject.  Throughout the course there is a focus on the use of new technologies in order to make your teaching lively, interesting and relevant.

Your personal subject mentor in your placement schools will  help you with planning effective lessons, managing classes taking account of differing student needs, classroom organisation and assessment for learning and for planning. Peer support from your fellow maths PGCE Associate Teachers is encouraged by the subject providers with group discussion at the start of subject studies sessions, and there is an ever open line of communication with the Lead Maths mentor by e-mail and through the KMT Forum.

To assist with planning for effective teaching and learning, aspects of inclusion, differentiation,  assessment, cross-curricular ideas, mathematical language and misconceptions, record keeping and reporting are included in the subject studies sessions. Throughout the course the theory and the practice of teaching Mathematics  are closely linked.

What is special about this course?
  • As a participant in a School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) course, all of your training will take place within a school environment where you will be able to benefit from the experience of practising teachers. Several of our mentors are past trainees of KMT and therefore have a very good understanding of the requirements of the course

  • Weekly subject studies sessions provide a link between educational theory and school-based practice.  These sessions are delivered by experienced practitioners, some of whom are Advanced Skills Teachers.  As these providers are practising teachers they are fully conversant with the challenges of the role of a teacher.

  • Over recent years most of our trainees have been successful in finding their first teaching appointment before the end of the course.  Several have been appointed within our consortium school and have gained early promotion to posts of responsibility

  • Your progress is assisted and monitored by an individual Mentor and a Lead Mentor for the subject

Entry Requirements
You will need to show evidence of good relevant subject knowledge.
Trainees accepted onto this course need a degree with at least 50% mathematics content,  energy and enthusiasm, an ability to be organised and to meet deadlines, a flexible and tolerant understanding of young people and a desire to become reflective and engaging practitioners.
