Meopham School

http://www.meopham.kent.sch.uk

Meopham School is a Specialist School and Sports college and is the hub school for the Gravesham School Sports Partnership (8 secondary schools, 28 primary schools, 2 special schools). It is an 11 - 18 co-educational foundation High School in an area of Kent Selection. The student population is fairly evenly split between those living in areas of high social capital but poor access to services (rural) and those in the lowest 20% of wards for social deprivation factors but in the major conurbations (urban). The school has a very mixed ability and social profile and goes to significant lengths to provide support and challenge for every kind of student and family.

Becoming a specialist sports college has enabled us to bring into sharp focus our key aims:
ü      A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body
ü      The School at the Heart of its Community
ü      Leading learning
ü      A Sporting Culture

From discussions with other schools and from conferences, we appear to be unusual in the ways in which we are embedding the sporting culture (specifically excellence, personal best, teamwork, participation and active learning) into the heart and soul of the school. Our policies and procedures are shot through with these key concepts and targets. By 2006, we had re-structured our organisation and management to maximise a new competitive House System (named for British Olympic Champions), an emphasis on high-quality teaching and learning and the importance of enrichment and participation for every student.

The school is viewed as innovative and progressive through its involvement in projects both locally and nationally. Many staff are involved in leading developments, in learning networks, bid-writing for the Cluster and training staff from other schools.  Of particular note is the project with Startrac and Fitlinxx to develop software to track health, fitness and participation within the school community and across the Partnership.  Partnership for Schools (BSF) is monitoring our progress as a case study for BSF nationally.
