From Trainee to Confident Classroom Teacher: Mr Talabi’s Journey with KMT
Newly qualified primary school teacher Mr Talabi shares his experience training with KMT. From expert mentoring and immersive in-school learning to securing a teaching role before qualification, his story highlights the supportive, practical, and empowering path KMT offers aspiring teachers.
What influenced your decision to train with KMT?
I looked for other organisations in the local area, and KMT was the best option. They had a wide range of partner schools, and I liked the look of the website. I also heard positive reviews from previous KMT trainees, and during the discussion stage, the KMT staff were able to provide a clear and exciting pathway to gain QTS.
How did you/are you finding your training experience with KMT?
I have found my training experience enjoyable. I have learned so much on this journey and feel fully equipped to go and teach in a school environment. The training so far has been practical and extremely applicable to the primary school setting that I’m training in.
What advantages did in-school training provide?
I think the immersive style of KMT is brilliant. Not only do you learn the pedagogy of teaching, but you actually get the chance to teach real children in a real setting. I have been able to grow so quickly, far beyond what a book could teach. The ability to learn, apply, receive feedback, reflect, and then apply what you’ve learned is fantastic! This structure really allows you to grow very quickly. The balance between online, face-to-face, and in-school training is perfect. It really prepares you for professional work.
What insights or benefits did you gain from your mentor?
I was blessed enough to have an experienced mentor who showed me classroom routines, how to assess, and would constantly monitor my growth while also highlighting areas I needed to improve. They were a huge contribution to my development.
Some of the knowledge my mentor shared has been priceless, and when I have questions or need support, I can go to my mentor and we quickly find solutions. I’ve learned how to manage workload, gained marking tips, strategies for managing behaviour, communicating with parents, and maintaining professional conduct.
What are your career plans after you complete your training?
I have been fortunate enough to have already secured a job! Once I qualify in a few months, I intend to complete my ECT year and then move forward into subject leadership. Having QTS opens up so many doors.
Do you have any advice for those interested in training to be a teacher?
If you want to be a teacher and you’re reading this—don’t delay. I held off for so long, and I wish I had done this sooner. Find a good training provider because your training year is so important—it’s the foundation of your teaching career. I would strongly recommend KMT, as you are supported, trained by seasoned experts, and the course is extremely practical. You will walk away with more than just a qualification—you will walk away with the knowledge and the confidence to teach.
